DIMITRA HANIOTAKI (CANDIDATE FOR THE ENGLISH LITERATURE ENTRANCE EXAMS)

'Imagine you were the Prime Minister of Greece for one whole year. What steps would you take to react to the environmental crisis Greece is facing? Write an essay describing the solutions you would give to two major environmental problems and explaining why.'

If I could be the Prime Minister of Greece for a year, I would definitely take some serious measures against the environmental problems that Greece is facing today.

The major cause of one the most serious environmental problems, deforestation, is arson, especially in the summer. I would try to reduce the rate of arsons by arranging more police patrols around the big forests of our country. Moreover, I would take steps and punish the arsonists in a strict and severe way, so they would think twice before they commit arson again.

Another grave problem that not only Greece but the whole planet is facing is the waste of water. We all know that the results of the reduction of water in our planet will be dramatic , so what I would do to solve the problem is to inform everyone by distributing information booklets on the problem. I would also rise the price of water, so that the households would have to cut down on the use of water.

Of course, these are not the only problems that our country is facing, there are many more and the Prime Minister is not the only one to be held responsible. We can all do something to face them by taking them seriously and changing our lifestyle in many profound ways.
