ALIKI KAFETZOGIANNAKI (ADULT LEARNER OF INTERMEDIATE LEVEL): The story of 'The Five Orange Pips'

The Five Orange Pips is a story about three men, who died in an unusual way. The three men had a serious problem with a group, the Ku Klux Klan, which was formed in the Confederate army after the American Civil War. They did nor want Negroes to be free people. They killed people who tried to resist them. They sent a warning before they killed someone. The warning was usually given by sending a fruit, for example orange pips.

The first man in the story named Elias Openshaw died after he received a letter where there were five little orange pips. The police found him next to the lake with his face in the water. The police said that it was suicide because he had no marks on him. He left his money and property to his brother, Joseph Openshaw.

A year later, Joseph opened a letter. There were five orange pips in the envelope. There was also a message but Joseph wanted to forget about it. So when he went to visit a friend, two days later, he had an accident. He fell off his horse and he died. His son, John Openshaw, inherited the money and the house and he lived happily for two years.

But one day he received a letter with five orange pips inside it. Then, he went to Sherlock Holmes for help. He told him everything about the mysterious things that happened to his family and asked for help. Holmes told him what he had to do and to be careful because he was in danger.

The next day John drowned in the River Thames and the police believed that it was an accident. Holmes was very upset and he wanted to take revenge for the three men. But in the end, the murderers of the three men were on a ship which sank in the ocean because of very strong winds!
